About Pardess

Welcome to Pardess Center for Jewish Life!

Pardess is committed to creating a vibrant Jewish community, where people of all backgrounds and affiliations can learn and grow in a non- judgmental environment.

We seek to unite the Jewish population in Southern Dutchess County, raise observance level, and increase involvement in religious activities.

Pardess is an affiliate of the global Chabad-Lubavitch outreach network and is inspired by the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

The Name

The Hebrew word “Pardess” literally means “orchard,” and is an acronym for four levels of interpreting the Torah: Pshat, Remez, Drush, Sod.

Pshat is the simple, literal meaning of the text;
Remez (allusion) includes explanations based on hints in the text, such as acronyms and numerical values of the Hebrew letters;
Drush (or Midrash) refers to the homiletic interpretation;
Sod (secret) is the esoteric, mystical dimension of the Torah, namely Kabbalah.

Pardess provides the opportunity to gain from the Torah’s teachings and traditions at whatever level the participant is comfortable. Jewish individuals and families of any background can explore their heritage in a non-judgmental and warm environment. It is the uniqueness of every individual that makes the orchard beautiful—and our community complete.
